Optical Cross Connect Cabinet Basics and Selection Guide

What Is Optical Cross Connect Cabinet?

Optical Cross Connect Cabinet, is a kind of FTTX connection equipment that provides fiber optic cable terminations and jumpers for the backbone and distribution layer fiber optic cables. The optical cable is introduced into Optical Cross Connect Cabinet, with fixing, terminating, and splicing the fiber, the backbone layer optical cable and the distribution layer optical cable are connected with the jumper fiber.

Types of Optical Cross Connect Cabinet

According to different occasions, it can be divided into two types: indoor type and outdoor type, and it can be installed on the floor, overhead, or wall-mounted. The outer dimensions of the box body of the outdoor fiber optic cable transfer box should not exceed 1600 mm *1100 mm *400 mm (height*width*epth).

Also we could classify by fiber Splitting Capacity: 72 fiber core, 96 fiber core, 144 fiber core, 288 fiber core, 576 fiber core.

What are the features of Outdoor Optical Cross Connect Cabinet

The Optical Cross Connect Cabinet is a connection device installed outdoors. The most fundamental requirement for it is to be able to withstand the drastically changing climate and harsh working environment.

1.It could have the characteristics of being waterproof and condensed, waterproof and dustproof, pest and rodent-proof, and strong against impact damage.

2.It could be able to withstand the harsher external environment. Therefore, the outer side of the box has relatively high requirements for waterproof, moisture-proof, dust-proof, impact damage, and pest and rodent control; the inner side has very high requirements for temperature and humidity control. According to international standards, the highest standard for these projects is IP66.

At present, the main types of Optical Cross Connect Cabinet used in China are: unsaturated polyester glass fiber reinforced material (SMC), which has good performance in terms of waterproof, moisture-proof and impact damage. The domestic imitations of KRONE cabinets are based on iron metal cabinets (generally reach the IP65 standard).

For metal boxes, due to their inferior performance in terms of waterproofing and condensation, they are destined not to be used in large quantities and are gradually eliminated. Due to material performance problems, some domestic imitation products are quite different from the KRONE imported from Germany in terms of water-proof condensation and impact resistance.

In addition, due to the poor anti-aging performance of the sealing tape, it is waterproof and dust-proof. Performance is also average. Of course, when the external environment of the installation location of the optical cable transfer box is relatively good, it is acceptable to reduce the performance requirements and reduce the investment.

Consider the engineering requirement of Outdoor Optical Cross Connect Cabinet

As you know ,engineering requirement is always the first factor to consider in the installation and commission.

1.The movable optical fiber connector shall meet the requirements of "insertion loss" and "return loss" specified in the relevant standards of the selected type.

2.The withstand voltage level between the high-voltage protective grounding device and the metal workpiece of the box should not be less than DC 3000V, and no breakdown or arcing within 1 min.

3.The insulation resistance between the high-voltage protective grounding device and the metal workpiece of the box body shall not be less than 2'104MW under the test voltage of 500V DC.

4.The cross-section of the ground wire connecting the high-voltage protective grounding device to the metal reinforcing core, moisture barrier and armor layer in the optical cable should not be less than 6mm2.

How to choose the capacity of Outdoor Optical Cross Connect Cabinet

The capacity of the Optical Cross Connect Cabinet refers to the maximum number of fiber cores that can be terminated by the fiber optic cable transfer box.

The size of the capacity is directly proportional to the volume of the cabinet, the overall cost, and the difficulty of construction and maintenance, so it should not be too large.

In actual design and engineering, it seem to only require the larger the capacity, the better the capacity of the optical cable transfer box, but this may bring about the consequences: the volume of the box increases and the price of the equipment increases.

In fact, the capacity of the Optical Cross Connect Cabinet that we often refer to should refer to its fiber distribution capacity, that is, the sum of the fiber distribution capacity of the backbone optical cable and the branch optical fiber cable distribution capacity.

The capacity of the optical cable transfer box should actually include three parts: the main optical cable through capacity, the main optical fiber distribution capacity and the branch optical fiber distribution capacity.
